The UltraCane is a new electronic mobility aid, designed to help you get around more easily and safely.

It increases the amount of information available to you about obstacles in your path and at head height. This means you can make decisions more quickly. In other words, it gives you more confidence and allows you to walk faster than with a traditional white cane. You can find out how it works with our UltraCane Demonstrator.

If you’ve been following the progress of the UltraCane from its beginnings as the “Batcane” (because it was inspired by the way bats navigate in darkness), you’ll know it’s taken a while! Feeling safe and confident
This is what the UltraCane is all about. It's an electronic primary aid, which you can use in place of other mobility aids such as the ordinary white cane. It gives you all the information you can get from a white cane, but with important additions:

• It uses ultrasonic echoes to find out where obstacles are ahead of you and at head height.
• It converts this information into vibrating buttons in the handle which tells you where an object may be and how far away the obstacle lies.

This means that when you are travelling around with the UltraCane you build up a spatial map of your surroundings. You don't have to think about it - it just happens naturally, because of the way our minds work. The result? You have all the information you need to feel and be safe and confident.

The UltraCane has undergone extensive trials over the last five years to ensure that the opinions of blind people were central to its design.
